As heavy rainfall continues to batter various parts of Mumbai, doctors have issued a warning about a spike in gastrointestinal (GI) issues among residents, urging them to take precautions to protect their health.

During the monsoon season, the risk of water-borne diseases rises, often leading to an increase in gastrointestinal (GI) problems.

Dr. Biswa Patra, a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist at the Asian Institute of Medical Science (AIMS Hospital) in Dombivli, stated, "Water-logging significantly deteriorates the quality of drinking water and food. As a result, there is a heightened risk of gastrointestinal infections, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It is essential to be mindful of these risks and implement preventive measures."

He provides the following key guidelines to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal infections:

- Avoid drinking tap water; instead, opt for boiled or bottled water, as boiling for at least one minute can eliminate most pathogens.

- Practice good hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and clean water, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

- Use hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available.

Dr. Bobby Sadarwarti, a Pediatrician, Neonatologist, Allergist, and Lactation Consultant at AIMS Hospital in Dombivli, advises, "Children should avoid roadside food, particularly during the monsoon season, due to its potential health risks. Street food vendors often operate in unsanitary conditions, and their food can become contaminated with flies, dust, pollution, and rainwater. These conditions can harbor harmful bacteria and viruses that may cause stomach infections such as diarrhea and cholera."

"Children's developing immune systems make them more susceptible to these infections. Consuming contaminated food can lead to serious health issues, including dehydration and potential hospitalizations. Therefore, parents and caregivers should encourage children to eat home-cooked meals or food from reliable sources to ensure their safety and well-being," he added.

Raw fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed with clean water before consumption. Additionally, proper waste disposal is crucial to prevent further contamination of the water supply.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of a gastrointestinal infection should seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications and limit the spread of the infection.
